Lufthansa Technik AG has now equipped the newest Lufthansa aircraft with a Premium Economy cabin. The Boeing 747-8 „Yankee Quebec“ arrived – fresh from the factory in Seattle – on August 30 in Frankfurt, where it received its new Premium Economy Class in mid-September during a layover for the completion of the cabin interior.

„The initial installation of the 32 seats was completed on schedule, and the team of more than 30 specialists is now preparing intensively for the modification of the entire fleet,“ says Michael Herrmann, who is serving as project manager for the integration of the Premium Economy Class in all of Lufthansa’s long-haul aircraft. From October 10 to November 20, Lufthansa’s remaining fourteen Boeing 747-8s will be modified one after another in Frankfurt, with each layover taking just three days.

By late summer 2015, Lufthansa Technik AG will have equipped a total of 101 Lufthansa long-haul aircraft with this new cabin class during these short layovers of three days. The modifications of the Airbus A380, A340-600, A340-300, and A330 aircraft types and the Boeing 747-8 and 747-400 will take place primarily at Lufthansa’s two hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, but modifications will also be performed during planned layovers in Hamburg, Manila and on Malta.

An initial modification, including EASA approval, is required for each aircraft type before the complete fleet of that type can be equipped with a Premium Economy Class cabin. The number of seats in the Premium Economy Class varies by aircraft: while the A330, for example, seats 21 passengers, the Airbus A380, with 52 seats, will offer the largest Premium Economy Class.
